From the ‘Coventry Evening Telegraph’
“A PETITION has been launched calling on developers and the council to tidy up a derelict piece of city centre land ahead of the Olympics. The land sits between the Belgrade Theatre and the Belgrade Plaza multi-storey car park and was expected to house a huge block of student accommodation before Coventry University pulled out earlier this year.
It has remained boarded off ever since and now Socialist Party Councillor Dave Nellist says something needs to be done to sort the area out.
He is calling on the people of Coventry to back the petition, which he hopes will start a debate on the future of the land.
“It’s been a few years since anything’s been said about it,” he said.
“It occurred to me that if we’re supposed to be sprucing the city up ahead of the Olympics this piece of land should be on the list.
“It’s looks a bit like green space – because of the giant weeds that have sprouted up – and I think we should be looking to develop it for public use.
“We’re spending money on the city centre and the various gateways and yet when people come to the Belgrade Theatre they have to walk past this boarded up derelict piece of land. It’s a waste of important space.”
