Parents Demand a New School in Foleshill

ohn Gulson School Protest 9aParents of pupils at John Gulson primary school in Foleshill held a demonstration outside Coventry council house this morning (Thursday 17 Dec) to demand better facilities for their children at the run down school.

Socialist Party councillor Rob Windsor, who assisted the parents group with organising the demo, said he had visited the school in Foleshill this week and the conditions for pupils were appalling.

ohn Gulson School Protest 9Parents at the rally called on Colin Green, director of Children, Learning and Young People at Coventry City Council, to make the improvement or replacement of their school a priority.

From next year it is planned to increase the number of pupils attending the school by adding 15 new pupils to the reception year, on yearly basis.  This is totally unacceptable in a school which is desperately in need of repair and woefully unfit for purpose already.

Councillors Rob Windsor & Dave Nellist have a meeting scheduled with Colin Green for the first week in January to discuss the problems at the school.  Dave Nellist also called on the parents to come back to the council house on January 12th to lobby the next full meeting of Coventry City council.

ohn Gulson School Protest 6Labour Party councillor Jim O’Boyle was asked by a teachers’ union member what he thought should be done about the school, unfortunately O’Boyle’s answer was “If we stopped paying teachers so much we could afford to build better schools.”  This shocking statement shows the contempt New Labour careerist politicians have for teachers, parents and pupils in the city!

John Gulson School Protest 8It’s important now that the parents’ group step up the action in their fight for a decent school for their children.  Socialist Party councillors and members will be right alongside them.
