2009 News ArchiveEricsson - The fight for jobs continues (December 13, 2009)
Socialist Party campaigners braved the freezing cold on Saturday morning to continue the campaign to stop the closure of Ericsson. The proposed loss of 700 jobs will be a further massive blow to the city.
Many people stopped to sign the petition, and expressed their support for the nationalisation of the company. Shoppers were pleased to hear that Socialist Councillor and former Labour MP Dave Nellist would be standing against Minister of Defence Bob Ainsworth, in the Coventry North East constituency. This was reflected in the donations we collected and swift sales of 'the Socialist' newspaper.
The need for a campaign to save jobs, not just at Ericsson but across the board was illustrated by one young person who stopped by to talk to us. He was 19 years old, and lived in Birmingham. He worked part time in a bar in Brum, and wanted a full time job. He had travelled to Coventry to go round all the fast food outlets looking for work. He had found nothing. Thats one of the reasons why the Socialist Party supports the 'Youth Fight for Jobs' campaign which campaigns for decent well paid jobs, for free education and against the scourge of unemployment.
